I’m running for District Court Judge, Seat 3, in District 26 A.
Some of you have been supporting me since I announced my candidacy back in February and some of you are new – welcome!
Hard to believe, we are less than 60 days from Election Day and only 30 days away from Early Voting.
Let me catch you up on what’s been happening and where we are headed.
For the past 6 weeks or so I’ve been embroiled in litigation over my ability to run in this race. My opponent's wife and friend from high school tried to keep me off the ballot - had they prevailed, my opponent would have been unopposed in the race.
Wanting to keep me off the ballot struck me as -- odd, because when my opponent ran against incumbent Hon. Tyyawdi Hands, he said: "I believe in the democracy of the way we have things set up here in North Carolina and I think every race should be challenged," See the whole article.
After a 7 hour hearing, at which 9 witnesses testified, the Mecklenburg County Board of Elections ruled against me on both challenges.
Believing deeply that the Board was incorrect, I filed appeals.
Finally now, after about 10 hours of litigation, countless hours of research and preparation, it's over. I am on the ballot!
I will work just as hard and with the same tenacity for the litigants of Mecklenburg County with which I beat back my challenger’s wife and friends. I do not give up. Hard work; reasoned, thoughtful solutions; even temperment – those are key.
I have been practicing law since my opponent was in middle school. I have had a long and varied career during which I have developed a unique skill set, honed by hard work, trial and yes, error; late nights and weekends, pouring over books, talking to clients – holding their hands; running a law practice and never, ever, losing my humanity, my empathy.
I am a Mother, a lawyer, a partner, a small business owner, and one of you. I hear you. I have been tuned in since day 1 of my legal career as a staff attorney with The Legal Aid Society and through my days representing the most vulnerable – our children – at The Children’s Rights Society. I have never lost my compassion and commitment, through private practice in big firms and small, affluent firms and – not so affluent and now in my solo practice.
I am the best choice for seat 3. I invite you to speak with litigants who have had cases before my opponent, here is a list: I Have First Hand Experience, call them.
Please come out and meet me, we will post our next event soon. Or, if you are having an event or want to open your home or office, I’ll come to you.
It is important that we work together.
We can do this!
